Wild Columbine has showy, drooping, bell-like flowers containing nectar that attracts long-tongue insects and hummingbirds. Foliage adopts a lovely purple hue in cooler temperatures giving seasonal interest when not in bloom. Wild Columbine likes a shaded woodland habitat with dappled sun and prefers soils that are not too rich, as well as enjoying rocky sites.

With its early bloom time, Wild Columbine is a vital food source for hummingbirds, bees, butterflies and hawk moths. Once blooms have past, the seeds feed a variety of birds including finches and buntings.

Wild Columbine hybridizes easily with non-native varieties so it is best grown without other columbine varieties to preserve the true species and its benefits to pollinators.
