Rosa blanda

Smooth Wild Rose is named such because new growth does not have thorns (older woody growth does have small thorns, so use caution if pruning). Also named Early Wild Rose, lovely scented pink flowers put on a show while feeding many types of pollinators, especially native bees. Large red rosehips stud the shrub in the fall for a second show of interest providing a food source for many herbivores and reddish stems provide winter interest.

This Rose, as many of our other roses, spreads via root suckers to form thickets and can be slightly aggressive if conditions are favourable, so plant wisely in small landscapes.
