Sambucus canadensis

Elderberry is a powerhouse of a shrub providing food for copious amounts of pollinators with its nectar rich clusters (up to 10” wide!) of white flowers and berries for birds and other wildlife. It is popular among humans as well thanks to the medicinal properties of the cooked berries, but also for tasty jellies and wine. Berries must be cooked adequately prior to consumption as the are toxic when raw (always do your research prior to consuming any wild plant).

Reaching up to 10’ tall, Elderberry makes a lovely privacy hedge when planted in groupings, or plant individuals for gardens. It will grow best in rich well-drained soil and can tolerate full sun - part shade. Individual plants can be short lived, but may sucker sending up new shoots. To extend the life of your Elderberry, consider cutting back a few mature branches every other year to encourage new growth.
