Carolina Spring Beauty

from $0.00

Claytonia caroliniana

Carolina Spring Beauty is a low growing woodland spring ephemeral that has delicate white to light pink blooms with deep pink veins and often carpets the forest floor when in favourable conditions. Pollen from the flowers is relied on by the specialist Spring Beauty Miner Bee as the sole food source to feed their larva. The plant will die off and go dormant shortly after seed has developed, usually sometime in June.

While generally left ignored by deer, Spring Beauty corms are often enjoyed by mice and chipmunks so it is best to protect them by laying hardwire cloth to prevent digging, while allowing plants to emerge.
