Elymus hystrix

Bottlebrush Grass provides an interesting texture element to and shade garden with is seed head display. It is a cool season grass and can grow in a clump that slowly grows, but is fairly easy going and will pop up in various places making it well suited to a more ‘wild’ looking garden, unless you are willing to weed out seedlings each season (or as I like to, transplant the seedlings right next to the original clump).

Seed heads would add a unique look to floral arrangements.

Seeds are a wonderful food source for migrating birds and the leaves are eaten as a larval food source for the Northern Pearly Eye Butterfly.
